words are different, just as they are when human beings speak; but they are communicated in the same breath. So in a transferred sense we can say that God speaks through the individual things he has created, and—in the words of an English hymn—‘God breathes through all creation’.19 The totality of creation which I have here called ‘the community of creation’ is sustained by the breath of God’s Spirit: in the words of Ps. 104:30: ‘Thou sendest forth thy breath and renewest the face of the ground.’
